The tram system at the Gateway Arch is undergoing a significant upgrade. The system is being modernized by replacing its mechanical equipment, and the electrical system, which controls the hoisting of the tram capsules. Project Director Chance Baragary says the project has been a major challenge since its conception. He cites space constraints as one of the biggest obstacles. During the redesign, new components have to be moved up to the top of the structure, and demo materials have to be moved down to allow for installation. One of the best ways to see the Arch from above is by taking a tram ride. The tram is a series of eight connected pods, each of which can accommodate up to five people. While the tram’s interior may make some people feel cramped, the view from the top is well worth it. If you’re staying in the city, you can also use the free public parking lots around the Arch. If you are visiting by car, you can find accessible parking near the Arch on Memorial Drive, or between Walnut and Market Streets. There are also wheelchairs available for loan from National Park Service rangers, but you must leave a valid form of identification at the Information Desk to get one.
